Louisiana House Candidate Elbert Guillory Doubles Down on GOP Switch, Blasts Democrats’ ‘Illusion’ of Black Support

Louisiana House candidate Elbert Guillory is making waves in the lead-up to the primary election, doubling down on his decision to switch from the Democratic to the Republican Party. In a new advertisement, Guillory defends his party change, accusing the Democrats of creating a deceptive narrative about their commitment to Black communities.

Guillory, the sole Republican candidate in the race, argues that the Republican Party, rooted in abolitionist principles, has a stronger historical record of championing Black rights than the Democrats. He points to the Democratic Party’s association with Jim Crow laws and their opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1957 as evidence of their hypocrisy.

‘The Democratic Party has created the illusion that their agenda and their policies are what’s best for Black people,’ Guillory states in the ad. ‘Somehow, it’s been forgotten that the Republican Party was founded in 1842 as an abolitionist movement.’

He further criticizes the Democratic Party’s reliance on government programs like welfare and food stamps, claiming they are merely tools for political control, not genuine solutions for poverty. ‘These programs aren’t designed to lift Americans out of poverty,’ he asserts, ‘They were always intended as a mechanism for politicians to control the Black community.’

Guillory’s campaign comes as the district he is running in has become increasingly competitive for Democrats after redistricting in 2022. Despite this, Guillory remains resolute in his belief that the Republican Party is the true champion of Black rights.

His bold stance and direct criticism of the Democratic Party have generated significant attention, injecting a new dynamic into the race. With the election just over a week away, it remains to be seen whether Guillory’s message will resonate with voters and shift the political landscape in Louisiana.
