Diwali 2024: Tamil Nadu Declares Holiday for Schools, Grand Celebrations in Ayodhya

The joyous spirit of Diwali is spreading across India, with states like Tamil Nadu joining in the festivities. The Tamil Nadu government, on Tuesday, announced a holiday for all educational institutions across the state on October 31 and November 1 to celebrate the festival of lights. Chhoti Diwali, also known as Narak Chaturdashi, will also be observed with a holiday declared for the second half of October 30. This year’s Diwali celebrations carry a special significance.

Marking the beginning of the festive season, Dhanteras was observed on Tuesday, October 30, setting the stage for the vibrant celebrations to come. While schools in Tamil Nadu will be closed for Diwali, other states including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Bihar are also observing holidays on October 31 and November 1. Some states will also have a holiday on November 2, for the occasion of Bhai Dooj.

Diwali in Tamil Nadu holds a unique charm with its rich traditions. One of the notable customs is the creation of ‘Kolam,’ intricate floor designs made with rice flour or colored powders. These vibrant designs are a symbol of welcome and prosperity, adorning homes and adding a touch of artistry to the celebrations.

Adding another layer of significance to this year’s Diwali, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the special occasion of Lord Ram, also known as ‘Ram Lalla,’ celebrating the festival in the newly constructed Ayodhya temple for the first time in 500 years. This event is expected to be a momentous occasion, drawing devotees and visitors from across the country.

To mark this historic event, the Yogi-Adityanath led government in Uttar Pradesh has planned a grand Deepotsav-2024 on Chhoti Diwali. This Deepotsav will be the first after the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony of Shri Ram Lalla at Ayodhya’s temple. In what promises to be an eco-friendly spectacle, the state government has announced plans to light 28 lakh lamps along the banks of the Saryu River. This grand display of lights is expected to be a visual treat, with the government taking special measures to ensure environmental protection.

The government will be using special wax lamps to minimize carbon emissions and protect the temple from soot damage, highlighting their commitment to sustainability. These lamps will remain lit for extended periods, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere while ensuring minimal impact on the Ayodhya temple’s structure. With the festive spirit in full swing, Diwali 2024 is set to be a remarkable celebration across India, marked by vibrant traditions, historical significance, and a grand display of lights.
