Steel Dynamics Joins EPA’s Green Power Partnership, Demonstrating Commitment to Sustainability
Steel Dynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ/GS: STLD) has announced a significant milestone in its sustainability journey: joining the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Green Power Partnership (GPP). This move underscores the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact and embracing renewable energy sources.
Steel Dynamics’ commitment to green power is evident in its impressive ranking. The EPA recognized the company as the 21st largest Green Power Partner among Fortune 500® companies and 33rd on its National Top 100 List of the largest green power users. This recognition reflects the company’s substantial investments in renewable energy.
In 2023 alone, Steel Dynamics’ steel mills utilized a remarkable 690 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power. This impressive figure represents 10% of the electricity used in its steel mill operations, marking a significant stride towards the company’s 2025 renewable electrical energy goal.
“We are proud to be recognized by the U.S. EPA for our use of green power,” said Jeff Hansen, Vice President Environmental Sustainability at Steel Dynamics. “By choosing to incorporate renewable power into our energy mix, we are not only reducing our emissions footprint but also actively supporting the growth of the renewable power market and the development of these vital resources.”
The EPA’s Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that encourages organizations to use green power, fostering the development of a cleaner energy future. James Critchfield, Program Director of EPA’s Green Power Partnership, highlights the significance of this initiative: “This list of the largest users of green power across the nation is proof that good business practices can also benefit the environment. EPA applauds the leading organizations in the Green Power Partnership’s Top Partner Rankings for their notable commitment to expanding their use of green power and protecting the environment.”
Further demonstrating its commitment to sustainability, Steel Dynamics signed the largest renewable product purchase agreement in the North American steel industry in 2023. This agreement, equivalent to approximately 15% of the company’s steel mills’ electricity usage, brought a wind energy center into commercial operation in the first quarter of 2024. This project represents a pivotal step towards the company’s ambitious goal of achieving 30% renewable electricity by 2030. It is also expected to make a substantial contribution to Steel Dynamics’ long-term reduction of Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity.
Steel Dynamics’ dedication to sustainability extends beyond its energy choices. The company is already a leader in producing lower-carbon, high-quality steel products. This commitment will continue to drive Steel Dynamics’ leadership role in decarbonization.
By joining the EPA’s Green Power Partnership and implementing these significant initiatives, Steel Dynamics is demonstrating its commitment to a sustainable future, setting an example for other businesses in the industry.
