India Reaffirms Commitment to Palestinian People, Calls for Ceasefire in UN Security Council

India has reiterated its strong commitment to the Palestinian people and called for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict, emphasizing its role as a reliable partner in fostering long-term peace and stability in the Middle East. This commitment was underscored by India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, during a UN Security Council Open Debate on the Middle East held on Wednesday.

Harish addressed the pressing situation in the region, highlighting India’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people. He detailed that India’s current development assistance for Palestine stands at a substantial $120 million, which includes a significant contribution of $37 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This commitment extends beyond financial aid, as India has also recently sent a shipment of 6 tons of essential medicines and medical supplies to UNRWA.

In his address, Harish condemned the terror attacks in Israel on October 7th, urging for the immediate release of all hostages and a ceasefire to bring an end to the escalating violence. He reiterated India’s firm stance, stating, “The terror attacks in Israel on 7th October deserve our unequivocal condemnation… I reiterate India’s call for an immediate release of all hostages and a ceasefire.”

India’s commitment to a peaceful resolution is further emphasized by its continued support for a two-state solution, advocating for an independent Palestine within mutually agreed borders. Harish stressed India’s willingness to engage with all stakeholders in the region to achieve lasting peace and stability. He urged the international community to come together in this endeavor, recognizing India’s role as a trusted partner dedicated to creating a more peaceful future for the Middle East. “We also urge all members of the international community in this endeavor. India underlines its abiding faith in its vision of a peaceful and stable Middle East. In India, the international community has a reliable partner that is willing to continue its engagement with all concerned stakeholders towards forging long-term peace and stability,” he concluded.
