These airstrikes targeted villages that had largely been spared from the worst of Israel’s military campaign against Hezbollah. The situation extends beyond Lebanon’s borders, with strikes also hitting the southern suburb of Dahiyeh in Beirut, causing significant destruction. Fortunately, most residents had evacuated before the attacks, preventing reported casualties in that area.
These intensified strikes come amid rising international calls for a ceasefire, with the United States and other nations urging a halt to the conflict. Despite this pressure, Israel’s military operations against Hezbollah have intensified, complicating the situation further. This escalation coincides with Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in northern Gaza, creating a two-front war that has deepened the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Since hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah reignited last year, Lebanon has suffered greatly, with at least 2,900 deaths and over 13,150 injuries reported, not including the recent airstrike casualties, which sadly include many women and children—approximately a quarter of the deceased.
The situation in Gaza is equally critical, with Israeli military actions resulting in over 43,000 deaths, according to Palestinian health officials. This figure encompasses both civilians and combatants. The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Palestinian militants launched a surprise attack on Israel, leading to around 1,200 deaths, primarily among civilians, and the abduction of 250 individuals.
In the aftermath of the airstrikes, Lebanon’s Prime Minister accused Israel of spurning ceasefire proposals, escalating tensions further. Meanwhile, a Hamas official disclosed that the group rejected a proposal for a short-term truce. United Nations officials have described the situation in northern Gaza as “apocalyptic,” raising urgent concerns for the local population’s safety and well-being.
