Hayes, a prominent figure in Connecticut politics, successfully fended off a challenge from Republican George Logan, marking her third consecutive victory in the district.
This latest win marks a significant moment for Hayes, who continues to hold a strong presence in the state’s political landscape. She first made history in 2018, becoming the first Black woman and Black Democrat to represent Connecticut in Congress. Her consistent victories since then, including her double-digit wins in the 2020 and 2022 elections, demonstrate her strong support among voters in the district.
The 5th Congressional District stretches along Connecticut’s western border with New York, encompassing a diverse range of communities. Logan, a Republican challenger who has served in the Connecticut state Senate and worked as an engineer at Aquarion Water Company for nearly three decades, sought to unseat Hayes. Logan’s campaign centered around issues like inflation, energy solutions, veterans’ affairs, first responder resources, and border security. He pledged to address inflation by promoting clean energy solutions and to strengthen national security by cracking down on drug cartels.
Hayes, on the other hand, brought her experience as a former teacher in Connecticut and her commitment to issues like education and healthcare to the campaign. She currently serves on the House Agriculture Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. She is also a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the House Pro-Choice Caucus.
With this victory, Hayes will continue to represent the 5th Congressional District for another term, ensuring the continuation of her voice and advocacy in Congress. Her commitment to issues close to the hearts of her constituents, coupled with her strong standing within the district, solidifies her position as a prominent figure in Connecticut politics.
