Alstom Unveils Coradia Stream Trains for Barcelona Airport Connectivity

## Alstom Unveils Coradia Stream Trains for Seamless Barcelona Airport Connectivity

Barcelona is gearing up for a major upgrade in airport connectivity with the introduction of Alstom’s new Coradia Stream single-deck trains. Unveiled at the “Tomorrow Mobility World Congress” in Barcelona, these sleek trains are set to revolutionize travel between the city center and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, starting in 2026.

Tailored for Efficiency and Accessibility

Designed specifically for high-demand airport routes, the Coradia Stream trains boast several features tailored to enhance passenger experience. Expansive luggage storage and wide corridors ensure easy movement for passengers, including those with reduced mobility. State-of-the-art passenger information systems and advanced signaling prioritize both safety and convenience, creating a seamless and stress-free journey.

Each five-car train, boasting 20 doors (10 on each side), can accommodate up to 656 passengers, including 209 seats, ensuring efficient boarding and a comfortable ride. A unique lighting system, with green signifying opening and red indicating closing, aids hearing-impaired passengers, while 20 panoramic screens across the cars provide real-time train and airport information.

A Commitment to Universal Design and Inclusivity

Alstom collaborated with the ONCE Foundation to ensure inclusivity and accessibility in the Coradia Stream design. Features like level boarding, automatic ramps, and designated areas for passengers with limited mobility are thoughtfully integrated. The trains also include multifunctional spaces for bicycles, strollers, and adapted toilets, all part of a universal design approach to ensure a comfortable journey for every passenger.

Sustainable Mobility and Eco-Friendly Engineering

Aligned with Alstom’s eco-design principles and FGC’s commitment to sustainable transit, these new trains are built with energy-efficient materials and systems, prioritizing recyclability at the end of their life cycle. The Coradia Stream trains contribute to reducing road congestion and CO2 emissions, reinforcing public transit as a green and responsible alternative.

A €177 Million Investment for Local Impact

FGC’s €177 million contract with Alstom includes the supply of 10 Coradia Stream trains, alongside a 15-year maintenance plan. Alstom’s commitment to local development is evident with the establishment of a new maintenance depot in Barcelona, creating new employment opportunities and reinforcing Catalonia’s position as a technology hub.

A Faster Route to the Airport

Beginning in 2026, the new service will connect Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia to both terminals of Barcelona-El Prat Airport every 15 minutes, covering the distance in just over 20 minutes. The 22.7-kilometer line, spanning nine stations currently under construction, will provide efficient and convenient access for commuters and travelers alike.

The Coradia Legacy: A Blend of Reliability and Innovation

The Coradia series, with over 30 years of continuous development, represents a testament to Alstom’s commitment to rail innovation. With 4,000 units operating across 12 countries, the Coradia series has proven its reliability and efficiency. Alstom’s advanced propulsion solutions, including battery and hydrogen options, further enhance the Coradia’s versatility, extending its use to non-electrified lines and solidifying Alstom’s dedication to sustainable rail innovation.
