Aston Villa Boss De Pauw: WSL Is a ‘Battle’ and ‘Every Week Is a Test’

Aston Villa manager Robert de Pauw has been quick to learn the realities of the Women’s Super League (WSL). His team’s winless streak across their first six league games since he took over from Carla Ward in the summer has been a harsh lesson in the league’s cutthroat competitiveness.

De Pauw, who joined Villa from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen Women, has experienced the high standards of women’s football across Europe. He readily compares the WSL to the Bundesliga and Dutch league, stating that “every team here in this league would fight for the national title in Holland.” He acknowledges that the Bundesliga has improved in recent years but emphasizes the difference in the WSL: “Here, all 12 are strong teams. In Germany, you have one, two, maybe three weaker teams that you can more easily find the points.”

Despite the daunting task ahead, De Pauw maintains his belief in his team’s potential. “We’re working really hard to get the win over the line. I think it’s in there. I think we can do it,” he stated ahead of their crucial match against unbeaten Manchester United on Sunday. He recognizes the challenge ahead, adding: “But it says so much about the WSL that it’s hard to do. And every week is a battle. You see the other teams are also very, very strong.”

The manager also highlighted the formidable challenge they face against Manchester United. He describes them as a “good footballing side that wants to play out from the back,” praising individual players like Grace Clinton, Ella Toone, and Dominique Janssen.

Aston Villa’s current struggles stem from their inability to capitalize on their strong performances. Despite creating more chances and controlling possession in many games, their defensive lapses have cost them dearly. De Pauw points to the need for improved ruthlessness in defense, specifically mentioning their lapses against Manchester City and Liverpool.

Despite the current situation, De Pauw remains optimistic about their chances to achieve their pre-season goal of finishing in the top six. He emphasizes the close nature of the league table and believes that consistency in winning crucial matches is the key to achieving that objective.

“Be more relentless and ruthless in our defending,” he emphasizes. “It’s not only about playing good football and nice football. It’s also about winning your battles on the pitch.”

The manager is confident that once they find a balance between their attacking flair and defensive solidity, Aston Villa will soon start climbing the league table. He believes it’s simply a matter of time before they secure their first win and begin their journey towards achieving their goals.
