India is on the cusp of a major manufacturing boom, with the potential to double its annual iPhone production to a staggering $30 billion. This surge is being fueled by the possibility of a significant shift in global supply chains, potentially sparked by President Trump’s policies.
The Economic Times reports that if President Trump carries out his threats of increased tariffs on Chinese products, India’s iPhone production will see a substantial increase. Currently, India manufactures iPhones worth $15 billion to $16 billion annually, but this could change drastically. Trump has historically championed tariffs on Chinese goods, previously imposing a 25% tariff during his first term. His recent campaign promises to implement even higher tariffs, ranging from 60% to 100%, could push Apple to relocate more production from China to India.
Experts anticipate that this potential shift in production would create an estimated 200,000 new jobs in India. Furthermore, the country’s contribution to iPhone manufacturing could skyrocket to 26% in the coming years, up from the current 12% to 14%.
This potential boom in iPhone production aligns with Apple’s recent moves to expand its presence in India. The company has just launched its first research and development center in the country, and plans to open four new retail stores.
The possibility of a major shift in global supply chains, coupled with Apple’s strategic investments in India, presents a significant opportunity for the country’s economy. It could not only boost manufacturing but also create a substantial number of jobs, placing India at the forefront of the global technology landscape.
