The Dallas Cowboys’ playoff hopes took a major hit as quarterback Dak Prescott will miss the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury. The news came from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who announced that Prescott will undergo surgery on Wednesday in New York.
Prescott has been sidelined since suffering the injury during the Cowboys’ Week 9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush stepped in, but the team has struggled in his absence. They suffered a devastating 34-6 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, with Rush throwing for just 45 yards.
Despite the disappointing performance, Jones expressed confidence in Rush’s ability to lead the team: “Cooper has shown that he has the capability to compete and win in games,” Jones said. “He does give us our best chance.”
The Cowboys, already dealing with the absence of star edge rusher Micah Parsons for four games, now face an uphill battle to make the playoffs. They currently sit at 3-6, third in the NFC East, and have lost four consecutive games.
Prescott’s season ends with 1,978 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He signed a record-breaking four-year, $240 million contract extension in September.
The Cowboys will be hoping for a quick recovery for Prescott as they look to rebuild for the 2024 season. This news comes as a major blow to the team and its fans, but with a talented roster and a strong leadership in Jones, they may still be able to make some noise in the upcoming weeks.
