In a move that will simplify the streaming landscape, Amazon is phasing out its Freevee service. Launched in 2019 as IMDb Freedive, the service rebranded to IMDb TV and later to Amazon Freevee in 2022. While the name is disappearing, the free content itself will remain accessible on Prime Video.
Amazon announced the change on Tuesday, stating that it aims to offer a more unified and streamlined viewing experience for customers. Prime members will continue to enjoy their existing benefits, while non-Prime members can still access a wide range of free streaming content, including select Amazon MGM Studios originals, licensed movies and series, and a vast collection of FAST channels. All this content will be seamlessly integrated into the Prime Video platform under a new “watch for free” label.
Although the change appears relatively minor, the long-term implications for the quantity and quality of free content offered by Amazon remain unclear. Currently, Prime Video offers a diverse selection of free content, including Amazon originals such as *Reacher*, *The Wheel of Time*, and *The Grand Tour*, alongside popular movies like *Lethal Weapon* and beloved comedy classics featuring *The Three Stooges* and *Mr. Bean*.
The update will affect viewers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria, where Freevee was previously available. As Amazon continues to reshape its streaming strategy, this move signals a clear shift towards a more centralized approach, offering a wider range of free content within the Prime Video platform. While the future of free streaming on Amazon remains to be seen, this change represents a significant step in the evolution of their content delivery model.
