The Serenity, a 50-foot catamaran, issued a distress call at 8:30 a.m. after experiencing significant water ingress due to a gasket failure in its escape hatch. The U.S. Coast Guard, based in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, immediately relayed the emergency to nearby vessels. The Disney Treasure, situated about 80 miles away, responded promptly and altered course to provide assistance.
The Disney Treasure, built by Meyer Werft in Germany, is a state-of-the-art cruise ship boasting 1,256 staterooms and cutting-edge amenities. The vessel was en route from Eemshaven, Netherlands, to its homeport in Port Canaveral, Florida, in preparation for its inaugural season beginning in December 2024. Upon reaching the Serenity between 1:00 and 1:45 p.m., the Disney Treasure deployed a rescue boat, swiftly evacuating the four individuals aboard the distressed vessel. Captain Marco Nogara of the Disney Treasure praised the crew’s quick and coordinated response, stating, “Our crew members worked together on the rescue, skillfully demonstrating their training and commitment to safety.” The U.S. Coast Guard monitored the situation from the air, ensuring the safety of all involved.
