Laura Robson Backs Emma Raducanu’s Choice of Top Fitness Trainer Yutaka Nakamura

Emma Raducanu’s quest for consistent success on the WTA Tour has led her to seek the expertise of one of tennis’ most respected fitness trainers, Yutaka Nakamura. This strategic move, currently in the discussion phase, has earned the enthusiastic endorsement of former British No. 1, Laura Robson.

Robson, speaking on Sky Sports Tennis, revealed her familiarity with Nakamura through his previous work with Maria Sharapova and during Robson’s own training time in Florida. She highlighted his extensive experience at the IMG Academy, where he’s also coached renowned golfer Nelly Korda, emphasizing his world-class credentials. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Robson underscored Nakamura’s amiable personality, crucial for the demanding travel schedule faced by professional athletes.

“He’s such a nice guy to get along with as well, which is important for when you’re on the road so many weeks of the year,” Robson stated. “Hopefully it works out because I think that would be a really good addition to the team. It sounds like a positive.”

Raducanu’s 2023 season was punctuated by injury setbacks, including wrist and ankle surgeries and a foot sprain that sidelined her after the Korea Open in September. Despite these challenges, she demonstrated remarkable tenacity, competing in 31 WTA Tour matches and maintaining a top 60 ranking. Robson believes that increased physical resilience, facilitated by Nakamura’s guidance, will pave the way for a more robust and successful 2024.

“We talk about these long seasons and being out there and competing. She’s still trying to build that resilience. She’s had some of those injuries, and I think she only played 31 matches on the WTA Tour this season,” Robson explained. “She’s still finished in the top 60, so if she can compete, play more tournaments, you just feel that there’s going to be more opportunities for her to move in the right direction. So I think in terms of investment, if she could bring on someone like that, I think it would be really good news.”

Raducanu’s return to the court is imminent, as she is set to compete for Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup in Spain. This tournament marks a significant step in her comeback and a testament to her dedication to overcoming adversity. With the potential addition of Yutaka Nakamura to her team, the tennis world eagerly anticipates Raducanu’s renewed performance in the upcoming season. The collaboration between a determined athlete and a highly respected fitness coach promises to deliver exciting developments in the future. The potential partnership speaks volumes about Raducanu’s commitment to long-term success and her strategic approach to overcoming past challenges.
