Hangzhou, China, a city steeped in history and modern dynamism, provided the breathtaking backdrop for Chanel’s pre-fall 2025 show. The event, graced by a star-studded guest list including Tilda Swinton and Lucy Boynton, held special significance as a homage to Coco Chanel’s enduring fascination with the city – a fascination reflected in her personal collection of Coromandel screens depicting West Lake. For Lupita Nyong’o, newly appointed as a Chanel global brand ambassador, the experience was profoundly moving.
“It was incredibly emotional to journey to China and witness the realization of Mademoiselle Chanel’s dream,” Nyong’o shared. Her connection to the event deepened when she recalled visiting Chanel’s Paris apartment at 31 Rue Cambon, where she encountered the very Coromandel screens that inspired the Hangzhou show. “To see those images come alive, surrounding me in this spectacular setting, was truly astounding.” The trip marked Nyong’o’s first visit to Hangzhou, and the city immediately captivated her with its unique blend of ancient and modern architecture and design. “The interplay of history and modernity, the palpable serenity born from its Buddhist roots – Hangzhou is rich with a captivating spirit,” she described in an exclusive interview with Vogue.
Beyond the cultural immersion, Nyong’o enjoyed a front-row seat to the Chanel show itself. The collection, featuring refined tweeds, outerwear, and knitwear, left a lasting impression. “The burnt orange and gold cropped pant two-pieces were absolute standouts,” she recounted, highlighting their vibrant burst of color. “And that gold maxi dress… it seemed to float! The model appeared to glide effortlessly in it.” The striking thigh-high suede and patent leather boots further completed the captivating presentation. Nyong’o described them simply as “divine!”
Nyong’o’s own style for the event perfectly complemented the outdoorsy setting, striking a balance between chic elegance and cozy comfort. Conscious of the potentially chilly weather, she chose a luxurious elongated, double-breasted couture godet coat in a soft pink hue, adorned with a stunning feathered collar. “I loved the A-line silhouette, the surprising gathers in the back – it gave a light, delicate flow to a wintery garment,” she noted. “The silk lining felt incredibly luxurious, making for a stylishly warm evening.” This stunning look is just one example of Nyong’o’s growing collection of Chanel pieces. Last year, she embraced a vibrant Barbie-inspired pink and purple tweed at the Paris couture show, and her wardrobe boasts several classic Chanel pieces. “I have a classic black double-flap handbag that I use constantly,” she shared. “And my white sneakers are perfect for exploring new cities; they’re comfortable and elegantly understated.” While the sneakers might have been ideal for navigating Hangzhou, the elegant knit boots were the perfect choice for the fashion presentation itself.
The Chanel show in Hangzhou was more than just a fashion event; it was a confluence of history, culture, and breathtaking style, beautifully captured in the experience of Lupita Nyong’o.
