Apple is facing a massive legal challenge after a woman, using a pseudonym for protection, filed a lawsuit alleging the tech giant failed to protect victims of child sexual abuse by abandoning its planned Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) detection system. Announced in 2021, Apple’s plan was to use on-device technology to scan iCloud images for CSAM. However, the feature was scrapped in 2022 amidst a storm of controversy. While Apple maintains a nudity-detection tool within its Messages app, critics argue this is insufficient to address the spread of CSAM.

The 27-year-old plaintiff, herself a victim of childhood abuse, claims that law enforcement notified her that images of her abuse were found stored on iCloud via a seized MacBook in Vermont.
