Microsoft Leads Charge: New Coalition Aims to Inject Billions into US Clean Energy, Prioritizing Environmental Justice

NEW YORK, Dec. 11, 2024 – The clean energy landscape is experiencing a seismic shift. Acadia Infrastructure Capital, a prominent player in clean energy investment, has unveiled the Climate and Communities Investment Coalition (CCIC), a bold initiative designed to supercharge clean energy development while simultaneously addressing historical environmental injustices. With tech giant Microsoft as its anchor member, the CCIC is poised to become a transformative force in the US energy sector.

The CCIC’s ambitious goal: to facilitate the construction of at least 5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy projects over the next five years. This monumental undertaking translates to preventing approximately 15 billion pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere annually – the equivalent of removing millions of cars from the road. The generated clean energy will power over 850,000 homes, contributing significantly to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

But the CCIC’s impact extends far beyond sheer energy production. A core tenet of the coalition is its unwavering commitment to environmental justice. Projects funded by the CCIC are meticulously designed to maximize community benefits, focusing on expanding access to sustainable infrastructure, fostering healthier environments, promoting economic inclusion, and empowering community organizations. This holistic approach recognizes that the transition to clean energy must be equitable and inclusive, benefiting all communities, not just some.

“The CCIC represents a ‘triple win’ for our member corporations,” explains Tim Short, Managing Partner at Acadia Infrastructure. “It delivers clean energy solutions, contributes positively to their bottom line, and generates tangible, positive real-world impact. We’ve already seen success with the recent completion of our first project in Texas, and anticipate similar deals driving billions of dollars in clean energy investment over the coming years.” The successful Texas project serves as a powerful testament to the CCIC’s model, showcasing its viability and potential for widespread success.

Microsoft’s involvement underscores the growing corporate recognition of environmental responsibility and the significant business opportunities presented by clean energy. Danielle Decatur, Director of Environmental Justice at Microsoft, emphasizes the alignment between the CCIC’s mission and Microsoft’s sustainability goals, highlighting the support from the Sustain Our Future Foundation, which is dedicated to maximizing equitable community benefits and achieving environmental justice in sustainable development.

Yinka N. Bode-George, Founder and CEO of the Sustain Our Future Foundation, further underscores the coalition’s importance: “The CCIC embodies a powerful collaborative commitment to rectifying historical environmental injustices while advancing clean energy solutions. We are dedicated to ensuring meaningful, long-lasting benefits for community stakeholders.”

Acadia is actively recruiting additional corporate partners to join the CCIC, creating a platform for mutual learning, collaboration, and shared progress towards a more sustainable energy future. Dr. Brian O’Callaghan, Vice President at Acadia, aptly summarizes the initiative’s broader impact: “The CCIC empowers US corporations to significantly scale the real-world impact of their clean energy initiatives. It showcases how corporate action can attract additional capital, supporting the creation of a low-cost, reliable, and secure US energy system.”

Acadia Infrastructure Capital’s innovative investment approach, as explained by Short, focuses on developing customized investment structures tailored to the unique goals of its partners. The CCIC stands as a prime example of this approach, showcasing its ability to drive a just energy transition and fostering a more sustainable future for all. The future of clean energy in the US looks brighter, thanks to this groundbreaking coalition and its commitment to both environmental sustainability and social equity.
