Goa Makes Strides in Digital Infrastructure and Tourism with New Initiatives
On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Goa took significant steps towards enhancing its digital infrastructure and boosting its tourism sector. The Department of Information Technology, Electronics, and Communications launched free public Wi-Fi services across 75 locations, a move aimed at bridging the digital divide and improving internet accessibility for both residents and visitors. This initiative is particularly relevant given the current global trend of increased reliance on digital technologies and the growing importance of reliable internet access.
North Goa now benefits from 46 free Wi-Fi hotspots, while South Goa has 29, ensuring wider coverage across the state. This expansion of free public Wi-Fi is in line with the global push towards digital inclusion and aligns with the Goa government’s commitment to providing essential digital services to all its citizens. The initiative is expected to significantly improve connectivity, particularly in previously underserved areas.
Furthermore, the department unveiled the “One Map Goa GIS,” a comprehensive Geographic Information System platform designed to serve as a centralized decision-making tool for government agencies. This platform will streamline governance processes, optimize resource allocation, and improve the efficiency of public services, making Goa a smarter state in line with global smart city initiatives. The development of this platform reflects Goa’s commitment to using technology to improve public administration and decision-making.
To further enhance internet connectivity, particularly in rural and remote areas, the government inaugurated 11 fully functional 4G BSNL towers. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Minister Rohan Khaunte officiated the launch, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring reliable high-speed internet access across the state. This expansion aligns with global efforts to extend broadband access to underserved communities and is particularly relevant in bridging the digital divide in developing regions. The government has already identified an additional 66 locations for the establishment of more 4G towers, signaling their intent to continue expanding internet reach.
In a move to enhance Goa’s tourism appeal, Minister Khaunte also launched the ‘LetsGoa’ app, a comprehensive platform designed to provide tourists with a seamless and premium travel experience. The app offers a range of features including accommodation booking, activity planning, and a closed-loop digital wallet for transactions, aligning with the global trend of contactless payments and digital tourism services. The app represents a significant step towards making Goa a more accessible and tech-friendly destination, enhancing the overall tourist experience and attracting more visitors.
