A Night Out at the Met Gala: Lessons from a Professional Party Girl

Several years ago, Chioma Nnadi, then my editor at Vogue.com and now the head editorial of content for British Vogue, approached me with an intriguing idea. The number of after-parties following the Met Gala had become overwhelming, leading to the notion that it would be nearly impossible to attend them all. This inspired Chioma with a thought: What if someone attempted to do just that?

Embarking on this annual social odyssey, I’ve attended around 20 Met Gala after-parties over my years at Vogue. By May 7th, that number will likely increase to at least 25, assuming all goes according to plan. As I prepare for my final nights of peaceful slumber before this adventure, I’ve taken some time to reflect on the lessons I’ve learned from my experiences as a professional party girl.

One key lesson is the importance of knowing one’s limits and choosing alcoholic beverages wisely. I’ve discovered that Champagne brings out the best in me, while tequila can lead to unfavorable outcomes. Vodka is enjoyable in moderation, but excessive consumption often results in regrettable text messages. White wine and rosé tend to interrupt my sleep, while red wine allows me to maintain composure and even engage in physical activities the following day.

During my first Met Gala after-party, I consumed whatever drinks were offered without much thought, leading to a severe hangover and anxiety the next morning. I’ve learned the importance of tracking my alcohol intake and pacing myself to avoid unpleasant consequences.

Balancing the excitement of attending multiple events with financial responsibilities is crucial. To avoid financial strain, I keep track of my spending using the Notes app on my iPhone. Additionally, I’ve discovered that many celebrities and influencers benefit from complimentary services such as expensive facials, hair treatments, and makeup, which are often beyond the reach of the average person.

The reality of attending these events is often far from the glamorous image portrayed in the media. Behind the scenes, celebrities engage in mundane activities such as socializing awkwardly, checking their phones, and seeking refuge at the bar to combat anxiety. It’s important to remember that everyone, including celebrities, experiences moments of insecurity and vulnerability.

Despite the challenges, the thrill of attending the Met Gala after-parties remains. I’ve learned to embrace the unique energy of these events and find joy in the serendipitous encounters and conversations. It’s an experience that provides an up-close glimpse into the world of fashion, entertainment, and social dynamics.

While I prepare for the upcoming First Monday in May, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and excitement. Despite the uncertainty surrounding my outfit, invitations, and the availability of that elusive facialist, one thing is for sure: I can’t wait to share the gossip and memories with you all the following day.
