Delhi Police Detain AAP Student Wing Workers for Slogan Protests at IPL Match
In a recent incident at Arun Jaitley Stadium during an IPL match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Police detained around 12 student wing workers from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The protestors were wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the ‘Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se’ tagline, part of AAP’s ongoing campaign against the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in an excise policy-related money laundering case.
The student wing of AAP, Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), organized the protest to condemn Kejriwal’s arrest, which they deemed illegal. During the match, the students raised slogans against the BJP government while wearing t-shirts bearing the campaign slogan. The incident was captured on video and shared on AAP’s official x account (formerly Twitter).
Responding to the protest, AAP stated in an official statement that the students’ actions were a form of protest against the ‘illegal arrest’ of the Delhi chief minister.
Delhi Police, however, stated that the protestors had created a public nuisance and were detained accordingly. The police emphasized that spectators should enjoy the game without engaging in such activities within the stadium. The detained individuals were expected to be released after completing legal formalities.
The ongoing Lok Sabha elections include seven constituencies in Delhi, scheduled to vote on May 25th. AAP’s ‘Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se’ campaign encourages voters to support the party in response to Kejriwal’s arrest, which occurred after being lodged in jail on money laundering charges.
