New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected from Monday’s 2-0 loss to Oakland in bizarre fashion. Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt tossed Boone after five pitches, claiming he had shouted at him.
Boone vehemently denied the accusation, stating that he had only raised his hands to question whether Oakland’s Esteury Ruiz had swung at a pitch. Video evidence appears to support Boone’s claim, as a fan behind the dugout can be heard yelling at Wendelstedt.
Despite Boone’s protests, Wendelstedt insisted that he did not care who had made the remark and that Boone was responsible for everything that happened in his dugout. Crew chief Marvin Hudson attempted to calm Boone, but the manager continued to argue his case.
Boone’s ejection has sparked controversy, with many questioning the fairness of Wendelstedt’s decision. It is not the earliest ejection in MLB history, but it certainly ranks among the most questionable.
Boone plans to speak with Major League Baseball about the situation, as he feels that he was treated unfairly. Bench coach Brad Ausmus took over as acting manager for the remainder of the game.
