Abbey Woodward’s impressive performance led Waldwick to a crucial 7-5 victory over Emerson, snapping a six-year losing streak against the rival team.
Woodward’s grand slam in the second inning proved decisive, giving Waldwick a substantial lead. She finished the game with a remarkable 4-for-4 record, contributing a total of six RBIs.
Waldwick’s defense also played a pivotal role in securing the victory. Carleigh Nocito, a newly-minted flex player, showcased her exceptional range and fearlessness in the outfield, making several highlight-reel plays. Hailey Zirpoli’s strong fielding and Lizzie Davis’s steady presence in the infield further solidified the team’s defense.
Coach Mike Kilgallen praised Woodward’s performance, noting that she had matured and overcome the pressure that may have hindered her in previous years. He also acknowledged the significance of the win against Emerson, a preeminent Group 1 school in Bergen County.
Woodward herself attributed her success to the motivation provided by her teammates, stating that their confidence in her pushed her to perform at her best. The victory was particularly meaningful for the Waldwick seniors, who had never defeated Emerson during their time with the team.
This win marks a significant milestone for Waldwick softball, showcasing the team’s growth and potential. The players’ trust in one another and their ability to execute under pressure bodes well for their future success.
