Abhay Hadap emerged victorious in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) secretary elections on Tuesday, defeating Suraj Samat by a narrow margin of 55 votes. The election, held to fill the vacancy created after the passing of former president Amol Kale, saw a close contest between the two candidates.
Hadap, a seasoned administrator and incumbent apex council member, was backed by the association president Ajinkya Naik and the maidan clubs. His extensive experience working at the club level, spanning 35 years, has fostered strong relationships with the secretary and officials of the member clubs. He had been responsible for managing MCA’s ticketing and tournaments over the past five years. In his new role, Hadap expressed his desire to focus on ‘working for the betterment of all the clubs’ and the cricketers.
Samat’s candidacy was proposed by legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Despite his backing, Samat received 141 votes compared to Hadap’s 196, out of a total of 337 votes cast.
Hadap, visibly elated after his win, told reporters, “I had never imagined that I would hold the MCA secretary post, and I have no words to express my happiness. I want to do so many things at the grassroots…”
Both Hadap and Samat had been elected to the MCA apex council two years ago and were due to complete their first term in 2025. However, with Naik’s elevation to the presidency, an opportunity for advancement arose, leading to the close race between the two contenders. Ultimately, Hadap secured the position, marking a significant milestone in his administrative career.
