Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plotted to kill him two days ago. Addressing rallies in Jangipur and Murshidabad on Wednesday, Banerjee said that the BJP has done everything possible to intimidate him, including raiding his helicopter using the Income Tax department and sending the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after him. He also claimed that the BJP even targeted his wife and parents.
Banerjee’s comments came after the arrest of 26/11 suspect-turned-approver Rajaram Rege for conducting a recce of his house and office. Rege’s wife and four locals, including two taxi drivers, have also been questioned by Kolkata Police’s Special Task Force (STF). According to police, Rege has deleted most of the data from his phone but they have recovered some details of calls made and received from call centers in Sector V and other IT firms. His phone has been sent for forensic tests.
Banerjee alleged that the BJP has used a section of the judiciary against him and that a judge who previously convicted criminals is now contesting on a BJP ticket. He also claimed that the BJP has been using central forces like its own cadre and accused the party of misusing them for votes and violence. He further alleged that the BJP has formed an alliance with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress in Bengal against his opposition bloc.
The BJP has not yet responded to Banerjee’s allegations.
