In the wake of the recent horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee has drawn attention to the alarming number of rape cases reported across India. While nationwide protests demanded justice for the Kolkata incident, Banerjee revealed that over the past ten days, a staggering 900 rapes were reported from various parts of the country.
Taking to social media, Banerjee expressed his concern, stating, “Over the past 10 days, while the nation has been protesting against the #RGKarMedicalcollege incident and demanding justice, 900 RAPES have occurred across different parts of India – DURING THE VERY TIME WHEN PEOPLE WERE ON THE STREETS PROTESTING AGAINST THIS HORRIBLE CRIME.” He emphasized the urgency for decisive action, highlighting the alarming rate of 90 rapes reported daily, equating to 4 rapes every hour and 1 every 15 minutes.
Banerjee called for stronger laws that mandate trials and convictions within 50 days, followed by the severest punishments. He urged state governments to respond swiftly and pressure the Union government to enact a comprehensive anti-rape law, stating that “Anything less is merely symbolic and tragically ineffective.” He believes such a law is crucial to ensure swift and strict justice, addressing the systemic issue of sexual violence in India.
