Abramorama has secured North American theatrical rights to the highly anticipated feature-length documentary ‘Invisible Nation,’ directed by Vanessa Hope. This captivating film investigates the election and tenure of Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan’s first female president, and her unwavering quest for international recognition of Taiwan’s right to exist.
Hope’s immersive documentary follows Tsai’s two consecutive terms, a period marked by her skillful balancing act. She bolstered Taiwan’s sovereignty through closer collaboration with the United States, all while avoiding direct provocation of China amidst rising concerns about its aggression.
‘Invisible Nation’ comes to prominence at a critical juncture, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present threat posed by authoritarian aggression. The film sheds light on Taiwan’s struggle for democracy and its future, highlighting the resilience and determination of its people.
Vanessa Hope, a renowned expert on U.S. and China relations, eloquently states, “I was not alone in knowing that the story of Taiwan needed to be told, but I never anticipated that peace would be this fragile, and the urgency of our film would become so critical.”
Produced alongside her husband, veteran producer Ted Hope, ‘Invisible Nation’ features a remarkable roster of Taiwanese and international interviewees. The film deftly guides viewers through Taiwan’s pivotal historical and contemporary events, unraveling the complex factors that have made it a political hotspot.
‘The people of Taiwan are real-life superheroes, as are the festivals and programmers who embraced us,” says Ted Hope. “As President Tsai makes clear, ‘China did not want this story told,’ and that was enough to scare some people off. ‘Truth to power’ films are now at risk, but I am willing to bet audiences everywhere are inspired by this story.”
‘Invisible Nation’ premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival in October 2023 before gracing screens at various prestigious U.S. film festivals, including the Hamptons and Mill Valley. It was also meticulously selected for international documentary festivals, including CPH:DOX and IDFA, where it had its European premiere.
Abramorama will commence the theatrical release of ‘Invisible Nation’ in New York City on May 31 at the prestigious Quad Cinema, followed by a nationwide rollout in major cities. Los Angeles will witness a multi-theater engagement, beginning on June 20 at the Laemmle Glendale and transitioning to the Laemmle Royal on June 21. Special screenings will be accompanied by insightful Q&A sessions with the filmmakers and distinguished guests.
“American audiences will be captivated by ‘Invisible Nation’ and will swiftly grasp the profound significance of Taiwan on the global stage,” asserts Karol Martesko-Fenster, CEO of Abramorama.
Ivan Orlic, producer of ‘Invisible Nation’ from Seine Pictures, adds, “It is an honor to collaborate with Ted and Vanessa Hope in narrating the untold story of Taiwan’s transition from autocracy to democracy. In doing so, we amplify the voices of resolute individuals who have courageously taken a stand to preserve freedom, protect personal liberties, and maintain peace for their country and its people. With the North American release of this film, we aim to raise global awareness about Taiwan’s story and plight, bolstering a growing movement dedicated to safeguarding democratic ideals worldwide.”
Produced by Sylvia Feng and Cassandra Jabola in addition to Orlic, Vanessa Hope, and Ted Hope, ‘Invisible Nation’ stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of Taiwan and the importance of preserving democracy in the face of adversity.
