Amidst the sweltering heatwave sweeping India, several police departments have embraced a groundbreaking solution: air-conditioned (AC) helmets. These ingenious headgears, crafted by Hyderabad-based start-up Jarsh Safety, provide a sanctuary of coolness for on-duty personnel, effectively reducing the wearer’s temperature by 10-15 degrees Celsius.
Powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the ActivCooling Helmets boast a remarkable operating time of up to 10 hours. Weighing a mere 200 grams, these helmets are remarkably lightweight, ensuring comfort during prolonged wear. Their design incorporates vents that facilitate optimal air circulation, while a plastic shield safeguards the wearer’s eyes from the sun’s glare.
To ensure safety and reliability, the AC helmets have undergone rigorous testing and certification by international organizations like ISO and OHS. The company emphasizes the low-power nature of the helmets, mitigating the risk of malfunctions or short circuits.
Trials of these AC helmets have taken place in various cities across India, including Hazratganj, Bhubaneswar, and Vadodara. In Hazratganj’s Atal Chowk intersection, four helmets were recently distributed to on-duty personnel for a month-long trial. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ajay Kumar indicated that the Uttar Pradesh police may procure up to 500 helmets based on the trial’s outcome.
Vadodara’s police force has already incorporated over 500 AC helmets into their operations. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jyoti Patel has even expressed interest in acquiring AC jackets for the police, further enhancing their comfort during the sweltering heat.
The company behind these innovative AC helmets, Jarsh Safety, is in talks with investors for expansion plans. The helmets have also gained international recognition, with Louisiana State University in the United States introducing AC helmets for its football team in 2023. The helmets proved highly successful, providing much-needed comfort to the players throughout the game.
