Academy Awards 2025: AMPAS Unveils Revised Rules and Campaign Protocols

To enhance the cinematic experience, the Academy has revised its screening criteria, mandating a minimum one-week run in select metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles County, New York City, and the Bay Area, as well as expanded theatrical standards in multiple US and international markets.

In a significant move, the Academy has merged the animated feature and international feature categories. Animated films submitted by foreign countries can now compete in both categories, provided they adhere to eligibility criteria. This change is expected to benefit composers, as the number of shortlisted titles in the best original score category has increased from 15 to 20. Up to three composers can now receive individual statuettes for their contributions to a score.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the Academy has made it mandatory for movie writers to submit their final shooting script for Oscar nomination consideration. This may impact films with extensive improvisation.

In addition to rule changes, the Academy has also revised special awards presented during the Governors Awards ceremony. The Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award will be presented as an Oscar statuette instead of a bust. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award has been updated to honor humanitarian efforts that promote human welfare and address inequities.
