Acer’s Project DualPlay: A Laptop That Transforms into a Gaming Console

Acer is generating a lot of buzz at IFA 2024 with its intriguing Project DualPlay. This innovative laptop concept boasts a unique design and features that are sure to turn heads. At first glance, Project DualPlay resembles a typical clamshell laptop. However, things get truly interesting when you open the lid.

One of the most eye-catching features is the detachable controller. Unlike clunky add-ons, this controller is seamlessly integrated into the laptop’s touchpad, secured by an electromagnetic lock. With just two fingers on a release button on the keyboard, you can detach the controller, transforming your laptop into a console-like experience without the need for extra peripherals. But the ingenuity doesn’t stop there. Drawing inspiration from the Nintendo Switch, Acer has made each side of the controller detachable as well. You can separate both sides from the central trackpad and use them as individual controllers for local multiplayer gaming, making it perfect for a spontaneous gaming session with friends.

While Acer has been tight-lipped about the specifics of Project DualPlay, early renders reveal that each side of the controller features a USB-C connection, presumably for charging while detached. The controller is a key element of Project DualPlay’s appeal, but it’s not the only feature that makes this laptop stand out. When you remove the controller, Project DualPlay also unveils stereo 5-watt speakers located on the sides of the laptop, resembling wings. This design, reminiscent of the Zephyrus G16, allows for powerful audio, delivering rich bass and detailed highs, ideal for an immersive gaming experience.

Adding to the allure, Project DualPlay is adorned with customizable RGB lighting. Acer has incorporated RGB strips along virtually every edge of the laptop. From the keyboard and trackpad to the controller’s joysticks, even the screen bezels are illuminated with vibrant RGB. Acer has also mentioned an “infinity mirror lighting bar” on the back of the laptop, although images of this feature are yet to be released.

We’re currently in Berlin for IFA 2024, where we’re eager to get hands-on with Project DualPlay and see its innovative features in action. This concept has certainly emerged as the most captivating project Acer has unveiled this year, overshadowing even the new Nitro Blaze 7 handheld and the world’s first 600Hz gaming monitor.
