Acropolis Mall, a prominent shopping destination in south Kolkata, is set to reopen its doors on August 3 after being closed for almost one and a half months due to a significant fire incident. The mall, which houses over 110 outlets and employs over 4,000 people, was forced to shut down after a fire broke out on June 14. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Subhadip Basu, General Manager of Acropolis Mall, confirmed the reopening date, stating that the mall received permission from the fire department. However, while the majority of the mall will be operational from August 3, some brands will require additional time to complete renovations and will reopen at a later date. Specifically, Hoppipola, Chili’s, and Time Zone are expected to resume operations after a few days. All other brands, including Cinepolis and the food court, will be open to the public on August 3.
The mall management has been working diligently on restoration work since the fire. On June 25, they received permission to restore power and reopen the office block from the fifth to the 20th floor. A fire inspection took place on July 5, and the mall secured clearance from the fire department on July 29 to reopen. Basu emphasized that all fire safety work has been completed, and they are now focused on conducting deep cleaning, mock fire safety drills, and communicating with retailers about the reopening.
Since its inception in 2015, Acropolis Mall has been a major economic hub for south Kolkata, and its closure significantly impacted local businesses. The mall, which sees an average of 15,000 visitors daily, has played a crucial role in boosting the local economy. Local shops, eateries, cafes, and restaurant chains are eagerly anticipating the mall’s reopening, hoping to welcome back their loyal customers.
