Acura Unveils Performance EV Concept, Hints at Future Electric Models

Acura has taken the wraps off its latest creation, the Performance EV Concept, a design study that offers a sneak peek into the brand’s upcoming high-performance electric models. Unveiled at the Monterey Car Week in California, the concept car boasts a striking design that draws inspiration from the sleek lines of hydrofoil superyachts. It features a sharp front end, a long wheelbase, and a fastback-like roofline reminiscent of the original ZDX, which was released in 2010.

One of the most eye-catching features of the Performance EV Concept is the absence of exterior door handles, adding to its futuristic appeal. While the car is still in its concept phase, Acura has confirmed that the production version will share many of its design cues, suggesting it won’t be too far removed from what we see on the show floor.

While Acura hasn’t disclosed any technical specifications, they have confirmed the concept runs entirely on electricity, ruling out any hybrid or plug-in hybrid options. The Performance EV Concept is built upon a new platform that Acura has developed in-house, marking a significant departure from the brand’s previous electric vehicle, the new ZDX, which utilizes a General Motors platform.

Acura has assured fans that more details about the Performance EV Concept will be unveiled in the coming months as the crossover transitions from concept to production car. The final model is expected to make its debut by the end of 2025, and it will be built by Honda, Acura’s parent company, in Ohio. This is not as unusual as it might seem, as Honda has been manufacturing Acura models in the US for nearly 30 years.

Looking ahead, Acura has hinted that some of the styling elements featured in the Performance EV Concept will trickle down to other upcoming electric models. Dave Marek, Acura’s design executive, has stated, “As with our previous Acura concept vehicles, the Performance EV Concept introduces a number of design themes that will be seen on future Acura vehicles.” So, while we wait for the production version of the Performance EV Concept, we can anticipate a wave of stylish and innovative electric vehicles from Acura in the coming years.
