Adani Defence and Aerospace has entered into a significant agreement with the France-based Thales group to manufacture 70mm rockets. These rockets are destined for the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Rudra and Prachand helicopters, crucial assets in the country’s defense capabilities. This partnership serves as a testament to the ‘Make in India’ initiative and the government’s vision of achieving self-reliance in defense manufacturing, also known as ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
Thales, a global leader in aerospace, defense, transportation, and security equipment, has joined hands with Adani Defence to strengthen its presence in India. The 70mm rockets produced under this collaboration will be utilized by the HAL Rudra and Prachand helicopters, playing a vital role in the IAF’s operational effectiveness.
The Prachand helicopter, classified as a light combat helicopter (LCH), holds the distinction of being the only attack helicopter in the world capable of landing and taking off at altitudes of 5,000 meters. This unique capability makes it indispensable for India’s defense strategies, particularly in mountainous regions. The Prachand is also renowned for its ability to carry a substantial payload of weapons and fuel, enhancing its combat potential.
The Rudra helicopter, a highly weaponized variant of the advanced light helicopter (ALH) Dhruv, is a key asset in reconnaissance missions. It plays a critical role in identifying enemy positions and providing vital intelligence to the IAF. The Rudra’s capabilities extend beyond reconnaissance, as it is also deployed for troop transport, anti-tank warfare, and close air support operations.
The IAF’s induction of the first batch of 156 LCH Prachand helicopters in October 2022 marked a significant milestone in its modernization efforts. The need for a lightweight, indigenously developed helicopter was strongly felt during the Kargil War in 1999. The Prachand’s ability to operate effectively in diverse terrains, from high-altitude regions to desert landscapes, makes it a valuable asset for the IAF.
Currently, the Indian Army operates 180 Dhruv helicopters, including 60 Rudra variants. The IAF has a fleet of 75 Dhruv helicopters, while the Navy operates 23. This collaboration between Thales and Adani Defence is strategically important for bolstering India’s defense capabilities and fostering a robust indigenous manufacturing ecosystem.
Thales has emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “Not only is this partnership significant for our commitment to India, but it also allows us to strengthen our partner network worldwide.” The company views this as a key milestone in achieving India’s goal of self-reliance in defense equipment. Thales has expressed its confidence in Adani Defence, stating, “We congratulate the Adani Group on this partnership. Together, we seek to contribute to further growth and success of India’s defense sector.”
