Legendary Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey will leave Red Bull in the first quarter of 2025, the team has confirmed. Newey, who has led the design of Red Bull’s cars since 2006, will be free to join another Formula 1 team immediately and help design their 2026 car. Several teams, including Ferrari with Lewis Hamilton, are reportedly interested in acquiring Newey’s services.
Newey’s departure from Red Bull marks the end of an era for the team. He has been instrumental in Red Bull’s success, leading the design of the cars that have taken the team to all 13 of their world titles. Team principal Christian Horner said Newey leaves the team as a “true legend”.
Newey said he is leaving Red Bull to seek new challenges. He said he has been lucky enough to live his dream of being an engineer in Formula 1 and that he is grateful to everyone at Red Bull who has helped him along the way.
In the meantime, Newey will focus on the final stages of development of Red Bull’s first hypercar, the RB17. He said he is confident that the engineering team is well prepared for the work going into the final evolution of the car.
Newey is one of the most revered and successful figures in Formula 1’s history. He has designed multiple title-winning cars for McLaren and Williams before joining Red Bull in 2006. He is known for his exceptional ability to conceptualize beyond F1 and bring wider inspiration to the design of grand prix cars, as well as his remarkable talent for embracing change and finding the most rewarding areas of the rules to focus on.
Red Bull has not yet announced who will replace Newey as the team’s chief technical officer. However, Horner said he is confident that the team has the talent and resources to continue to be successful in the future.
