Afghan Cricketer Ihsanullah Jannat Banned for Five Years for Match-Fixing

Afghanistan international cricketer Ihsanullah Jannat has been banned from all forms of cricket for five years due to match-fixing, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced in a statement on Wednesday. The ACB determined that batter Jannat violated the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption code during the second season of the Kabul Premier League this year.

According to the ACB’s statement, Jannat was found guilty of breaching Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, which prohibits improper influence or attempts to manipulate the outcome, progress, conduct, or any other aspect of a match. As a result of this violation, he has been suspended from all cricket-related activities for a period of five years. Jannat has acknowledged the charges against him and confessed to his involvement in corrupt practices.

Jannat is the younger brother of former Afghanistan cricket captain Nawroz Mangal. The ACB’s anti-corruption unit is currently investigating three additional players for potential involvement in match-fixing. The ACB stated that decisions regarding their participation will be made once their guilt is confirmed.

Jannat accumulated 72 runs in four matches for Shamshad Eagles during the KPL. His team, however, finished last in the six-team competition, securing only one victory in five matches. Jannat, 26 years old, has participated in three Test matches and 16 One Day Internationals (ODIs). He also represented Afghanistan in a T20 International against Zimbabwe in 2022, marking his last international appearance for the country.
