Afghan Refugee Cards Extended, New Special Court in Balochistan

The Government of Pakistan has extended the validity of Proof of Registration Cards (PoRs) for Afghan refugees that expired on April 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024. This decision was made during the federal cabinet meeting held at the PM House, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The extension will enable PoR cardholders to continue accessing essential services such as education, banking, and healthcare during their stay in Pakistan.

In a separate development, the federal cabinet approved the establishment of an additional special court in Makran Division, Balochistan, to deal with anti-narcotics cases. The jurisdiction of this court will cover the districts of Panjgur, Kech, Gwadar, Hub, and Lasbela. The cabinet emphasized the need to appoint an experienced and capable judge and ensure effective prosecution to combat drug trafficking in the province.

During the meeting, the Federal Secretary for the Interior provided an update on the progress of operations conducted by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). The Secretary of Aviation informed the cabinet about recent measures taken to enhance facilities at Pakistan’s airports, particularly in Lahore and Karachi. The meeting was informed that service counters have been increased, and upgrades are underway to improve passenger experience.

The cabinet also discussed the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) privatization process. Advertisements inviting expressions of interest were published in national and international newspapers on April 2, and several companies have expressed keen interest as of May 3.

Furthermore, the cabinet approved the appointment of four ex-officio members to the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants (ICMA) and ratified decisions made by the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases on April 18, 2024.
