Afghanistan’s opening batsman, Ibrahim Zadran, is facing a race against time to be fit for the historic one-off Test against New Zealand, starting on Monday. The 22-year-old sustained an ankle injury during the team’s final practice session on Sunday, casting doubt over his participation in the match.
“Today, in the practice session, Ibrahim had an injury in his ankle. But it’s not sure 100 per cent what will happen tomorrow. We will see what will happen with him,” Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi confirmed at the pre-match press conference.
Zadran has been a crucial part of the Afghan batting lineup, having played seven of their nine Test matches. He made his maiden Test century earlier this year in February against Sri Lanka. His absence would be a significant blow to the team, who are already without their star spinner, Rashid Khan.
Persistent rain has further complicated matters, disrupting preparations for the match. Both Afghanistan and New Zealand have faced challenges in getting accustomed to the conditions. The historic encounter marks Afghanistan’s first-ever Test match against New Zealand, adding another layer of importance to the already highly anticipated contest.
The team management will assess Zadran’s injury and make a decision on his availability closer to the match. The focus will now be on ensuring the injured batsman receives the necessary medical attention and support, while the team continues to prepare for the momentous occasion.
