Tye Sheridan and Nikola Todorovic, co-founders of Wonder Dynamics, are navigating the ethical landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) in the film industry.
Wonder Dynamics offers an AI platform that allows filmmakers to create computer-generated characters, making it more affordable and accessible to tell stories that were previously unattainable. Sheridan emphasized their goal of creating opportunities for artists and reducing filmmaking costs and time.
However, ethical concerns arise as AI advances. Todorovic clarified that Wonder Dynamics focuses on “extracting (visual) information, observing actors moving and performing,” rather than generative AI that creates new content. They believe this approach ensures that human performance remains an integral part of the filmmaking process.
Despite fears of AI replacing actors, Sheridan acknowledged that the economics of filmmaking are changing. He noted that certain films are struggling to find an audience, and AI could potentially help bring those stories to life. However, both Sheridan and Todorovic believe that the audience ultimately dictates the path forward, as they are the ones who consume and appreciate the final product.
Todorovic emphasized that Wonder Dynamics has a strong ethical compass, ensuring that any new features align with their mission of empowering artists. They resist the temptation to create flashy tools for social media, instead prioritizing the needs of creative professionals. They aim to prevent the industry from moving towards a future where live-action performances are diminished or absent.
