AI is Transforming Sports: Enhancing Player Performance and Fan Experience

Artificial intelligence is changing the way we experience sports, both as spectators and competitors. From providing athletes with detailed performance insights to enhancing the fan experience, AI is taking the world of sports to a whole new level.

IBM, a leader in AI technology, is harnessing the power of big data and AI to equip athletes with deeper insights into their performance and how they stack up against their rivals. This data-driven approach extends to fans as well, offering them more immersive, accessible, and personalized experiences.

Wimbledon, a prestigious tennis tournament, is partnering with Dell to introduce a new feature called ‘Catch Me Up’. This feature, available on the Wimbledon website and app, utilizes AI to create player stories and analysis, personalized based on user preferences and data like their location and favorite players. Fans can access pre-match analysis of recent performances and win probabilities, while post-match content includes key statistics and highlights.

AI is also being used to enhance the digital match center at Wimbledon, offering auto-generated summaries of matches beyond the main courts, including wheelchair events. This allows a wider audience, including families and friends of players, to access and enjoy the matches, regardless of their location.

Beyond tennis, AI is making its mark in other sports like golf. IBM’s technology enables fans to watch an entire round of golf, including AI-generated commentary, in just under three minutes.

The rise of augmented at-home experiences during the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of AI in sports. While digital experiences are growing, the allure of attending live events remains strong.

Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications at IBM, believes that AI will not replace the experience of watching live sports but will enhance it by providing fans with deeper insights and enriching their viewing experience. Research by IBM and Morning Consult reveals that 55% of global tennis fans believe AI will have a positive impact on the sport, citing the potential for improved fan experience through generative AI, real-time updates, personalized content, and unique insights.

As AI continues to evolve, its role in sports will likely become even more significant, transforming how we experience, engage with, and participate in our favorite sports.
