AI Revolutionizes Rail Travel for Deaf Passengers with Real-Time BSL Translation

A groundbreaking technological solution has been launched, revolutionizing rail travel for Deaf passengers. Signapse, in partnership with Network Rail, South Western Railway, and Whoosh Media, has developed an AI-powered system that translates vital rail travel information into British Sign Language (BSL) in real-time. This innovative technology provides Deaf passengers with access to information they need, including departure boards, on-platform announcements, and journey-based details, all in a format they can easily understand.

The system is simple to use. Passengers can scan a QR code at a station or on a train using their mobile phones to access real-time information displayed in BSL. The launch of this technology was celebrated at a special event at London Waterloo, attended by Sophie Woolley, a prominent Deaf performer known for her role in the TV series ‘Bridgerton’. Sophie expressed her excitement about this new technology, highlighting its significance for Deaf people’s access to rail travel and the broader impact of AI on inclusion.

Peter Whale, Project Manager at Signapse, emphasized the project’s goal of transforming the rail travel experience for Deaf passengers by providing timely and relevant information in BSL. He stressed the importance of having access to information in one’s preferred language for full participation in society. Funding for this project was provided by InnovateUK as part of a larger ‘First of a Kind’ demonstrator initiative, supported by the Department for Transport (DfT). This initiative aims to bring cutting-edge innovation to the rail industry.

The launch of this AI-powered solution marks a significant milestone towards improving accessibility for Deaf passengers. It showcases the potential of technology to enhance the travel experience for everyone. By providing real-time information in BSL, this technology empowers Deaf passengers to navigate rail travel with greater independence and confidence, making journeys smoother and more enjoyable. This advancement demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity and a commitment to creating a more accessible and equitable transportation system.
