A Gen Z career expert has highlighted a growing trend among candidates using AI tools such as ChatGPT to craft cover letters and job application responses. Shoshana Davis, in an interview with ‘CNBC Make It,’ emphasized the increased reliance on tools like ChatGPT. She stated, ‘I speak to businesses and employers who hire anything from 10 to 1000s of Gen Z every year. And one of the main challenges that I’m seeing at the moment is the use of AI, specifically ChatGPT, and it’s not being used in the right way, and it’s not being used effectively.’
This reliance has resulted in ’employers getting hundreds of the exact same cover letters word for word,’ Davis explained. She believes that while embracing technology and AI is essential, resorting to ChatGPT-generated answers could hinder job prospects. She shared an example of an employer she works with who was hiring for a brand marketing position. They asked candidates about their favorite fitness-related product launches, and ‘they said they got about 100 identical responses of ‘my favorite campaign launch was Peloton’ and the employer was like ‘ultimately that was ChatGPT, but then also equally Peloton was released like four or five years ago.’
Davis emphasized the need for young people to ‘educate themselves’ on the proper use of ChatGPT, cautioning, ‘In my opinion, you can use ChatGPT in the job search process but it should be used as a tool, not a replacement.’ By understanding how to leverage AI tools effectively, job seekers can enhance their applications without compromising their authenticity and originality.
