Air Canada has announced a significant expansion to its fleet, reaching an agreement with BOC Aviation Limited for the placement of eight brand-new Boeing 737-8 aircraft. These fuel-efficient and cost-effective aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2024 and will enter service in 2025, following necessary modifications. This strategic move reflects Air Canada’s commitment to enhancing its network capacity and supporting its sustainability goals by mitigating emissions.
Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada, expressed excitement about the addition of these aircraft, stating, “We look forward to these aircraft entering into service next year, upon the completion of some required modifications. These eight, brand-new, fuel- and cost-efficient 737-8s will provide more fleet flexibility and additional capacity while supporting one of our sustainability goals of mitigating emissions.”
Steven Townend, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BOC Aviation, also expressed his satisfaction with the partnership, noting, “We are pleased that Canada’s flag carrier, Air Canada, is working with us once again as it strengthens its network.” He highlighted the growing demand for aircraft driven by the resurgence of passenger travel and BOC Aviation’s ability to address this demand through its orderbook featuring the latest technology.
Air Canada, recognized as Canada’s largest airline and the national flag carrier, boasts a prestigious Four-Star ranking from Skytrax. As a founding member of Star Alliance, the world’s most extensive air transportation network, Air Canada operates scheduled services to over 180 airports across Canada, the United States, and internationally on six continents. The airline’s Aeroplan program stands as Canada’s leading travel loyalty program, allowing members to earn and redeem points across a vast network of 45 airline partners worldwide, as well as through partnerships with various hotels, car rental services, and merchandise providers.
The eight newly acquired Boeing 737-8 aircraft will initially feature a single Economy class layout. However, Air Canada has plans to reconfigure them to align with its narrow-body, two-cabin standard, ensuring the onboard experience that its customers expect. All eight aircraft will be equipped with CFM LEAP-1B engines, further contributing to their fuel efficiency and environmental performance.
