The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken a firm stance against Air India Express, levying a ₹10 lakh fine on the airline. The penalty stems from the airline’s non-compliance with passenger compensation regulations, specifically regarding flight cancellations. This action underscores the DGCA’s commitment to ensuring that airlines prioritize passenger rights and provide adequate compensation for disruptions.
The DGCA’s decision was reached following a comprehensive inspection conducted as part of its Annual Surveillance Programme (ASP) for 2024. During this inspection, which took place in June, the DGCA scrutinized various scheduled domestic operators to assess their compliance with regulations regarding passenger facilities and compensation protocols.
The ASP 2024 review highlighted significant shortcomings in Air India Express’s adherence to these regulations. The airline was found to have neglected its responsibility to compensate passengers according to established norms, leading to the DGCA’s corrective action. This penalty serves as a clear message to airlines that failure to uphold passenger rights will not be tolerated.
The DGCA’s proactive approach ensures that airlines prioritize passenger satisfaction and adhere to the necessary regulations. By holding airlines accountable for their actions, the DGCA aims to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers and promote a fair and transparent aviation industry.
