Air India Flight Diverted to Canada Due to Bomb Threat: Security Measures Tightened Across India

An Air India flight destined for Chicago from Delhi took an unexpected turn on October 15, 2024, when it was diverted to an airport in Canada. The reason? A chilling bomb threat received through an unverified social media account. Air India confirmed the incident, stating in a statement, “Flight AI127 operating from Delhi to Chicago on October 15, 2024, was the subject of a security threat posted online, and as a precautionary measure, had landed at Iqaluit Airport in Canada.”

The airline swiftly implemented stringent security measures, subjecting the aircraft and all passengers to thorough re-screening as per established protocol. “Air India has activated agencies at the airport to assist the passengers until such time that their journey can resume,” the airline announced.

However, the Air India flight wasn’t the only one facing threats. A total of four planes, including one bound for the United States, were targeted by bomb threats disseminated through a social media handle. This alarming incident triggered security agencies across India to activate specific counter-terrorist drills at various airports.

Official sources revealed that an X handle issued threats to four planes: an Air India Express aircraft traveling from Jaipur to Bengaluru via Ayodhya (IX765), a SpiceJet plane flying from Darbhanga to Mumbai (SG116), an Akasa Air plane en route from Siliguri to Bengaluru (QP 1373), and the Air India plane from Delhi to Chicago (AI 127).

The Air India Express aircraft underwent a comprehensive security check at the Ayodhya airport. Flight-tracking websites confirmed that both the SpiceJet and Akasa Air planes have safely landed.

Air India acknowledged that the airline, along with other domestic carriers, has been subjected to a series of threats in recent days. “Though all have subsequently been found to be hoaxes, as a responsible airline operator all threats are taken seriously. The inconvenience to customers is sincerely regretted,” Air India stated.

The airline emphasized its commitment to full cooperation with authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these threats. Air India intends to hold those responsible accountable for the disruptions and inconveniences caused to passengers. Further, the airline has also indicated that it will consider legal action against the individuals responsible to recover damages incurred due to these threats.

This incident highlights the growing concern over online threats and the potential impact on aviation safety. Authorities are actively investigating the source of these threats, taking steps to ensure passenger safety, and implementing stringent security measures at airports across the country.
