Air India’s Transformation Takes Flight with Major Workforce Expansion and Fleet Modernization

Air India has been experiencing a dramatic transformation since its acquisition by the Tata Group in January 2022. The airline has significantly expanded its workforce, hired a new generation of employees, and is modernizing its fleet at a rapid pace. This ambitious journey is part of Air India’s five-year transformation initiative, aptly named Vihaan.AI.

Over the past two years, Air India has hired an impressive 9,000 new employees, including 5,000 crew members. This surge in hiring has not only bolstered the airline’s capacity but also brought down the average employee age from 54 to 35 years, injecting a youthful energy and fresh perspective into the organization.

The airline’s commitment to modernization extends beyond its workforce. Air India is currently in the midst of a comprehensive fleet refurbishment program, targeting 67 narrow-body aircraft for upgrades by mid-2025. This project involves enhancing cabin configurations, improving seating, and providing passengers with a more comfortable and modern travel experience. The airline plans to complete three to four aircraft refurbishments per month, ensuring a steady stream of upgraded aircraft entering service.

Alongside fleet modernization, Air India has been expanding its reach, launching 35 new routes – 10 domestic and 25 international – and adding 11 new destinations to its network, including 2 domestic and 9 international. These strategic expansions reflect Air India’s ambition to become a global player in the aviation industry.

These efforts have already yielded tangible results. In the last financial year, Air India witnessed a 25% increase in operating revenues and a remarkable more than 50% reduction in losses. This positive financial performance showcases the impact of the ongoing transformation initiative and the airline’s commitment to profitability.

Beyond individual initiatives, Air India is also consolidating its aviation business. The integration of Air India Express and AIX Connect is expected to be completed by October, while the merger of Air India and Vistara is scheduled for November. These strategic moves aim to streamline operations, optimize resources, and enhance the airline’s overall competitiveness in the marketplace.

As Air India continues to implement its Vihaan.AI initiative, the airline is poised for a period of sustained growth and success. With its renewed focus on modernization, expansion, and integration, Air India is taking flight towards a brighter future, re-establishing itself as a leading player in the global aviation landscape.
