Airline Industry Surges as Demand for Travel Soars: IndiGo and Air India Lead Expansion, Alaska Airlines Invests in Boeing 737 MAX

The airline industry is experiencing a period of substantial growth and expansion, fueled by the increasing demand for both international and local travel. Leading airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, and Alaska Airlines, are making significant investments in new aircraft to meet this demand and expand their operations. IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has strategically positioned itself to dominate long-haul travel in the region by placing an order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, marking a shift from its traditional short-haul operations. This order is a part of IndiGo’s broader strategy of industry-wide growth and expansion. In June 2023, the airline deepened its partnership with Airbus by placing a historic order for 500 Airbus A320 Family aircraft, bringing its total Airbus orders to an impressive 1,330 aircraft. Additionally, in September 2023, IndiGo augmented an existing order by adding 10 Airbus A320neo aircraft to the previously planned purchase of 300 planes, further underscoring its ambitious expansion plans. Air India has made a significant stride in 2023 by ordering 470 aircraft from both Boeing and Airbus. This extensive order comprises 40 Airbus A350s, 20 Boeing B787s, and 10 Boeing B777-9s, along with 400 narrow-body aircraft. Throughout 2024, Air India plans to introduce a new aircraft every six days on average, including the induction of five additional Airbus A350 wide-body planes, 46 Boeing 737s, and 17 Airbus A320s. Starting in July 2024, Air India will also commence a complete interior overhaul of 40 legacy wide-body aircraft, including models such as the Boeing 777 and 787. Meanwhile, in the United States, Alaska Airlines has committed to a significant investment in the Boeing 737 MAX series. In October 2022, Alaska announced its decision to purchase an additional 52 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2027. This order complements Alaska’s earlier agreement for 68 737-9 aircraft between 2021 and 2024, with options for 52 more deliveries between 2023 and 2026. By 2030, Alaska Airlines is expected to operate over 250 new aircraft from the 737 MAX series. The airline anticipates the delivery of 43 more MAX aircraft in 2023 alone, at which point its mainline fleet will consist exclusively of Boeing aircraft. The 737-9 has been particularly noteworthy for its economic efficiency, fuel performance, and passenger satisfaction, positioning Alaska Airlines to enhance its fleet efficiency and growth over the next decade, with a new 737 MAX expected to join the fleet approximately every 10 days throughout 2023.
