Former Jet Airways CEO Sanjiv Kapoor has taken to social media to express his concerns regarding the lengthy entry queues and identification card checks at Indian airports, describing them as a “bottleneck” for passengers. He questions if there are alternative methods that could be implemented to streamline the process without compromising security. While acknowledging the benefits of the DigiYatra app for tech-savvy travelers, Kapoor points out its limitations for those who are not as digitally inclined, as well as its unavailability for international travel. The DigiYatra initiative, launched in December 2022, utilizes facial recognition technology to provide contactless identification at various points within the airport, including check-in, security, and boarding areas. It is currently operational at 13 airports across India, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Vijayawada, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Cochin, Guwahati, Jaipur, and Lucknow. Kapoor’s post has sparked a discussion on social media, with some users agreeing with his assessment and suggesting alternative security measures, such as Spot Saver, which allows passengers to bypass long security queues. Others, however, emphasize the importance of security checks to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering the airport premises, especially in light of the large number of people who accompany travelers to see them off. They also highlight the need for better training for security personnel to ensure efficient and informed checks.
