In a thrilling display of skill and determination, young wrestler Akshay Dhere emerged victorious in the 57kg final of the Federation Cup, held at the Maharaja Vibhuti Narain Indoor Stadium on Wednesday. Dhere, a National junior bronze medallist in 2022, showcased his prowess by pinning Parmod Kumar, securing his maiden elite title. The bout commenced with Parmod grabbing an early 4-0 lead, but Dhere remained unyielding. With characteristic patience, he chipped away at his opponent’s resistance, equalizing the score at 4-4 in the first period. Dhere’s tenacity continued to shine through as he executed a swift double-leg attack and leg lace, putting him ahead at 8-4. Maintaining his momentum, he performed another takedown and eventually pinned Parmod with two minutes remaining.
In another closely contested match, National silver medallist Sahil Kundu (61kg) overcame a 2-4 deficit to defeat Amit 17-7 in a high-scoring final bout. Kundu’s determination and tactical prowess proved decisive in securing the victory.
The Federation Cup also witnessed the election of seven candidates to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Athletes Commission. The successful candidates include Sahil, Smitha A.S., Bharti Baghel, Narsingh Yadav, Kushboo Pawar, Nikki, and Sweta Dubey. Narsingh Yadav was appointed as the chairman of the athletes’ commission, further strengthening the leadership within the wrestling community.
