Alaska Airlines Invests in JetZero’s Blended-Wing Aircraft for Sustainable Future

Alaska Airlines has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable future by investing in JetZero, a company pioneering the development of a revolutionary blended-wing body (BWB) aircraft. This strategic investment underscores Alaska’s dedication to innovation and its ambitious target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

JetZero’s BWB aircraft boasts a groundbreaking design that seamlessly integrates the wings and fuselage into a single, streamlined structure. This unique configuration significantly reduces aerodynamic drag, leading to a projected 50% decrease in fuel consumption compared to traditional tube-and-wing aircraft designs. The resulting lower carbon emissions and reduced operating costs make this aircraft a compelling solution for a more sustainable aviation industry.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the BWB aircraft offers a number of advantages for passengers. Its spacious interior allows for creative seating configurations, promoting a more comfortable and enjoyable flying experience. The aircraft’s unique shape also contributes to a quieter cabin, further enhancing passenger comfort.

Alaska’s investment, which includes options for future aircraft orders, was made through Alaska Star Ventures (ASV), the airline’s investment arm dedicated to driving innovation in the aviation sector. ASV’s mission aligns perfectly with Alaska’s broader sustainability strategy, which encompasses operational efficiency, fleet renewal, sustainable aviation fuel, waste reduction, and electrified aircraft.

“At Alaska, we are always looking for ways to innovate and shape the future of air travel for our guests, employees, and industry,” said Diana Birkett Rakow, senior vice president of public affairs and sustainability at Alaska Airlines. “We are proud to invest in JetZero’s development of this innovative next-generation aircraft, with a significant step-change in fuel efficiency. We and JetZero share a vision for more sustainable aviation, and we are excited to partner with them in creating that future.”

Tom O’Leary, CEO and co-founder of JetZero, echoed this sentiment, stating, “The biggest challenge for airlines is lowering fuel burn and emissions. Of all the great new technologies in work, the BWB design delivers the biggest impact by far. Airlines will see immediate benefit in cost savings, dramatically lower emissions and improved customer experience, compared to airplanes flying today.”

While the BWB design concept has been around for some time, JetZero has taken a leadership role in bringing this technology to fruition. The company has collaborated closely with the United States Air Force, NASA, and the FAA to develop and bring its groundbreaking blended wing aircraft to market.

Alaska Airlines’ investment in JetZero’s BWB aircraft signifies a significant step forward in the pursuit of sustainable aviation. As the aviation industry continues its journey towards a greener future, this partnership holds immense promise for reducing emissions and shaping the future of air travel.
