The Alberta government has unveiled a comprehensive ‘master plan’ for railway development in the province, drawing enthusiastic support from the Integrated Travel & Research Development (ITRD), a leading advocate for responsible and sustainable transportation solutions. The government’s plan is fully aligned with ITRD’s core mission of promoting responsible rail practices that benefit all Albertans. ITRD commends the Alberta government for embracing ‘Rail for All,’ an inclusive railway development plan that encompasses social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. ITRD Director of Research & Development, Vern Raincock, highlighted that this strategy underscores the government’s commitment to responsible rail, designed to serve the public interest holistically, reduce reliance on road transportation, and foster a more sustainable and connected Alberta. The master plan prioritizes not only the expansion and modernization of the province’s rail infrastructure but also the revitalization of rural communities nestled between major urban centers. By prioritizing rail connectivity between these communities, the plan, if implemented with a ‘Connecting Communities’ focus, has the potential to unlock economic opportunities and enhance access to employment and educational prospects, particularly for underserved and Indigenous communities.
