Amidst last year’s devastating wildfire season, Albertans sought ways to safeguard their homes and communities. In response, Alberta has implemented a structured approach to harness these efforts through the newly launched Wildfire Reservist Program.
This program invites individuals to become a part of Alberta’s wildfire response team by offering their skills or heavy equipment to assist in wildfire management. Those with heavy equipment can contribute to building fire barriers and containing wildfires around communities, while those with unique skills can undergo training to support various tasks.
To participate in the Wildfire Reservist Program, interested individuals can register on the Alberta Wildfire website. The program also includes non-firefighting support roles such as data entry, camp supervision, and cargo handling.
While the current wildfire situation has not necessitated activating reservists, Alberta Wildfire emphasizes the significance of advance preparation to ensure a swift response when required. Once individuals register their interest, they undergo an internal evaluation process for assignment to specific roles.
In addition to the Wildfire Reservist Program, Alberta Wildfire also has a signup form for contractors with specialized equipment, including bulldozers, excavators, water trucks, aircraft, and other essential services, to support wildfire response efforts.
For up-to-date information on wildfire status, evacuation alerts, and fire advisories, residents can refer to the Alberta Emergency Alert website, the Alberta Wildfire website, and the Alberta Fire Bans website.
