Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, cruised into the fourth round of the Mutua Madrid Open with a straight-sets victory over Thiago Seyboth Wild on Tuesday. Alcaraz, who is seeking a third consecutive title in Madrid, won 6-3, 6-3 in 75 minutes.
Alcaraz rattled off 10 consecutive games to take control of the match, but Seyboth Wild showed some late resistance and won three games in a row. However, Alcaraz regrouped and clinched the victory in the ninth game of the second set.
In other matches, Andrey Rublev defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (12-10), 6-4 to reach the fourth round. He will face 24th seed Tallon Griekspoor, who upset Holger Rune 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Fourth seed Elena Rybakina cruised past Mayar Sherif 6-1, 6-4 to advance in the women’s singles draw. However, reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova was upset by 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-1.
The Madrid Open is a key clay-court event in the lead-up to the French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year. The French Open will take place from May 26 at Roland Garros. Sky Sports will provide extensive coverage of both tournaments.
